IO-Link Spy makes communication visible

Analyzing IO-Link Communication – A Gift for Field Service Technicians

Communication in an IO-Link system always takes place between an IO-Link master and a connected device, and is divided into three data types: process data, which is exchanged cyclically and in real time, such as measured values or switching states; parameter data, which is transmitted acyclically and used to configure the device, for example limit values or operating modes; and event data, through which a device actively sends messages such as errors or maintenance notices to the master. Only the interplay of these three channels makes IO-Link such a flexible communication standard – and this is exactly where it becomes relevant for troubleshooting: anyone who wants to understand why a system isn’t responding as expected needs to know which data flowed between master and device, when, and in what order.

Service and commissioning teams therefore ask themselves the same question time and again, not just at year-end: which tool truly makes daily work analyzing IO-Link communication easier – and is nevertheless often missing from the toolbox?

TEConcept’s IO-Link Spy was developed exactly for this purpose. It analyzes and visualizes IO-Link communication without intervening in ongoing operation. This makes the IO-Link Spy the modern equivalent of the classic test lamp for industrial communication.

Checking IO-Link Communication Without Interfering

The IO-Link Spy is simply clipped onto the IO-Link cable. The signal is captured via capacitive coupling, processed, and transmitted to PC software. The existing communication remains completely unaffected. Especially in service cases, this is a decisive advantage: Faults that occur only sporadically or become visible only under real operating conditions can be analyzed without causing machine downtime.

For service, commissioning, and troubleshooting

The recorded IO-Link communication can be evaluated at various levels:

Filter, search, and analysis functions make it easier to quickly narrow down anomalies. This makes the IO-Link Spy suitable both for service technicians in the field and for commissioning and development teams.

A tool that should not be missing from any service case

Like the classic test lamp in electrical engineering, the IO-Link Spy is not a tool for every task—but it is one that makes the difference at the crucial moment. That is precisely why it belongs in every service case used to support IO-Link systems.

As a last-minute Christmas gift, the IO-Link Spy is therefore not only practical, but above all sensible: a tool that makes problems visible before they become critical.
